Our Community Shop is the oldest in Gloucestershire having opened in January 1982 after a period of snow when the village was cut off. It is open every Wednesday morning from 9 am till 12 noon in the Village Hall.
It was started with a £50 loan to purchase stock -just basic items. The loan was quickly repaid because the shop was popular and grew in the amount of stock held. Local businesses were generous in giving discounts to help the shop get established but it has always been non profit making and goods are sold at the prices they are purchased from the supermarket. The shop was presented with a “Village Ventures” award in 1983.
Over the years its income has declined as the older residents for whom it was mainly started have departed and younger people have transport or shop on-line. However the social gathering over tea or coffee is still a popular feature and the Post Office is a real benefit.
Most grocery items are available as well as local eggs, bread and frozen food. There are excellent cards for all occasions and books available to borrow for 50p – the money is given to charity.
